Terminología y categorías en el informe de frotis cervicales

Perspectiva histórica
Es ampliamente reconocido que los criterios y la terminología usados en la interpretación y el informe de los frotis cervicales varía de país a país. Esto a llevado a problemas de comunicación entre citopatólogos, citotecnólogos y clínicos y dificulta a los epidemiólogos hacer comparaciones válidas de la efectividad de los diferentes programas de screening de cuello uterino. La variación en la terminología impide una discusión de valor entre laboratorios y también afecta el manejo de pacientes y la introducción de métodos óptimos para el cuidado de pacientes.
El problema fue discutido en 1988 por el Instituto Nacional de Cáncer en los Estados Unidos de América, quienes prepararon un sistema de reporte para la citología cervical conocido como el Sistema Bethesda (TBS). En 1990, el programa Leonardo Da Vinci patrocinó la preparación de Tablas de Terminología Equivalente que comparaban los variados sistemas de informe de frotis cervicales en la Unión Europea con el Sistema Bethesda. Los miembros involucrados en la preparación de la página de Internet Eurocitología han decidido utilizar la terminología propuesta en el Sistema Bethesda debido a su amplia aplicación a nivel mundial. Cuando se considera apropiado se han mantenido vínculos con la Terminología Equivalente.
