Morphological and biological characteristics of invasive squamous carcinoma

Histological section of non keratinising squamous carcinoma. There are some chords of tumour tissue invading the stroma which also contains inflammatory cells and discrete bizare tumour cells with abnormal nuclei and abundant cytoplasm.

 

Cytological diagnosis of invasive squamous carcinoma

Well differentiated invasive squamous carcinoma. Note small squamous cells with pyknotic nuclei which vary in size and shape. Cytoplasm is highly keratinised a small cluster of undifferentiated tumour cells are also seen in the right hand corner. Note tumour diathesis.
Non keratinising invasive squamous carcinoma. Note small squamous cells with pyknotic nuclei which vary in size and shape. Cytoplasm is not keratinised. Note tumour diathesis.

The abnormal nucleus structure becomes apparent at higher magnification and the squamous nature of the lesion can be ascertained by examining the edge of the cluster where the cytoplasmic structure can be seen.
